Frequently remembered only as a period of military history which both saw the French beat the English and then the English fight amongst themselves, traditional historians have tended to regard The Wars of the Roses as an episode that wrecked England's military greatness.

John Gillingham's highly readable history separates the myth from the reality.

He argues that, paradoxically, the Wars of the Roses demonstrate how peaceful England in fact was.

From the accession of the infant Henry VI to the thrones of England and France in 1422 to the accession of Henry VII following the Battle of Bosworth in 1485, Gillingham uses his gift for graphic description (particularly with his exciting account of the 1471 campaign) to great effect.

He is also good at placing the warfare within its European context, especially in showing the problems encountered in conducting a civil war within a normally peaceful country.

The Wars of the Roses is an irresistible account of a fascinating period of history that makes available to a much wider audience the work of historians of recent decades.

Praise for John Gillingham

The Wars of the Roses eBook John Gillingham

This work does an excellent job compiling the literary works of contemporary chroniclers and observers and integrating them with the scholarship of historians today. It manages to describe the political landscape and the shifting alliances as the wars progress. I agree with another reviewer that it does have a military character but given the subject matter it will invariably focus on the important battles and campaigns, though it is less palace intrigue than say Dan Jones.

All in all its a good read but can be tedious for beginners or casual readers. It could use family trees or geneology tables for reference as well as maps. In my opinion, if you are just getting started I would highly recommend "The Wars of the Roses" by Charles Ross as a primer for this work.

The Wars of the Roses eBook John Gillingham Reviews

A historian who writes who everyone can understand. If you enjoy English history this is one you can read and really get the feel of life during the time of the War of the Roses. Makes you think of all of that was involved to build up to what really were short, but significant battles. I really enjoyed it and found so much I was not aware of about the times.
Very good detail about each of the battles, including who was involved and movement and position of armies. While an explanation about warfare and weapons was somewhat interesting , I think a shorter summary was all that was needed. Four chapters did not encourage interest in the book and I almost stopped reading until I finally got to some specifics about the Wars of the Roses.
Very interesting history of early English royalty and the subterfuge and deceitful behavior of leaders.
Good overview, but know your lineage and families during this period.
The author minimized the pain, suffering, and horror of the indigent population as the mercenaries "lived off the land".
At first it seemed like I was back in a school history class and then I kept reading. Viola it was written in a manner that grabbed your interest as well and was informative.
Great history book. Definitely presents this time in history better than anything I have read or watched recently.
